CREATING ART WITH SOUL AND NATURE

Neyda De La Peña

Contemporary Artist Focused on Tree Symbolism in Fine Art

Neyda De La Peña is a Mexican-born contemporary artist recognized for her exploration of tree symbolism in contemporary art through sculptural oil paintings on carved and reclaimed wood surfaces, as well as three-dimensional oil and gesso compositions on canvas. Her work examines the tree as a universal metaphor for life cycles, spiritual growth, resilience, and the continuity of memory.

Within contemporary symbolic art practices, tree imagery often represents interconnectedness, transformation, and rooted identity. De La Peña approaches this tradition by physically carving into wood panels, allowing natural grain patterns, knots, and organic irregularities to become integral symbolic elements within each composition.

Rather than applying the tree motif solely as imagery, she integrates the material origin of the wood itself into the conceptual framework of the work.

In parallel, she develops textured 3D oil paintings on canvas, using layered gesso to construct raised surfaces that enhance depth and dimensionality. This structural preparation transforms the canvas into a tactile field where oil pigment interacts with sculpted relief. The resulting works blur the boundary between painting and low-relief sculpture, reinforcing the vertical and symbolic presence of the tree form.

A recurring element in her practice is the transformation of natural or constructed textures—such as wood knots or gesso-built elevations—into symbolic celestial forms including suns and moons. This visual dialogue between earth (material surface) and sky (celestial imagery) reflects themes frequently associated with tree symbolism: ascent, rootedness, and connection between realms.

Since 2007, De La Peña has produced more than 2,500 original works, consistently centering tree iconography as a structural and narrative axis. Her artistic language situates her among contemporary artists who reinterpret traditional natural symbols through material experimentation, textured oil techniques, and sculptural intervention.

Her work has been exhibited in art festivals across the western United States and is noted for its integration of environmental materiality, symbolic storytelling, and dimensional oil painting practices.

Through her sustained focus on tree symbolism in contemporary fine art, Neyda De La Peña contributes to an ongoing artistic dialogue that connects ecological consciousness, spiritual metaphor, and three-dimensional painting methods.
